Trustee from 1951 until his death in 1997, he also served as director from 1956 to 1967. He was administrator of recreation and cultural affairs and commissioner of parks for the City of New York, Special assistant on the arts to President Ken­nedy and chief editorial writer at the New York Herald Tribune.
